Black Iowa News interviewed Jaylen Cavil, who is running as a Democrat in Iowa House District 36, which includes diverse neighborhoods south of I-235, parts of downtown and south of Grand Avenue. Cavil, who gained prominence as an activist with the Des Moines Black Liberation Movement after the murder of George Floyd, said the district is often historically thought of "as a really wealthy and white district," and some neighborhoods fit that designation.
